Kažun is a small field hut that provided shelter, built using the dry wall technique - stone laid up without mortar. Apart from offering shelter it was also used for checking fields and vineyards before the harvest.
The origin of the
kažun isn't related to a specific ethnic group, since these structures are much older than any known colonization of the Istrian Peninsula. Such huts are mostly found in the southern and western parts of Istria and are surely the most popular Istrian symbol.
